Kat asked:
I just had a friend call me all excited about wedding flowers she had seen. She said they were beautiful and after looking at them realized they had used tons of carnations for the bouquets. It sounds different and interesting and a big plus – probably cheap. What do you think? Does anyone know where I could see pics?

I think a WHOLE BUCH OF THEM in one bouquet could be pretty

I am personally not fond of carnations, but sometimes they work if they are complemented by the right other flowers. you might try googling ‘carnation bridal bouquet’ I don’t know what else was in the flowers that your friend called you about. and theoretically the carnations would be cheap. However that is not always true…talk to your florist.
Good Luck and Congrats

Carnations can be very nice if you use them in large quantities. Plus they come in a variety of colors.

Very unique, and they come in so many different shades. And if you like carnations, then go for it. Depending on where you live, and what season your wedding is in, you might find a killer deal on carnations.
I’d price around to local floral dealers. Some big club stores, like Costco and Sams do bulk florals…but, then you’d need to find someone in your family to do the arrangements. Don’t try to do them yourself: you’ll have way too much to do in the days leading up to your wedding.

I personally am not a fan of carnations at all. However I would be interested to see what the arrangement looked like that your friend had seen. It’s possible that with the right arrangement they could look nice – but I have never seen an arrangement of carnations that I would use for my own wedding. You’re right though – they would be much cheaper.
Rhonda
I think if they were the right color and tightly bound into bouquets that might be cool, but don’t use them for boutinniers. that’ll look cheap, like the groomsmen are going to prom or they’re pall bearers.

I actually LOVE carnations. They have a very feminine, airy feel about them. I think they get a bad wrap as filler, but I have seen some gorgeous carnation arrangements. I am getting married in 51 days (yay) and we are having large ivory carnation wreaths made for the doors of the reception venue and yes, a big plus is how cost effective they are. I am very much over the the super structured calla lilly bouquet overload that we have been seeing lately. A carnation trend would be a great change of pace!
I think they look best tightly bunched together like this bouquet
I just googled “carnation wedding flowers”… Good luck!

I happen to love carnations and am having them in my bouquets because I like them.
They also happen to be affordable, available in lots of colors (or dyeable) year round, they are sturdy and won’t wilt, and they are a full flower so you won’t need as many to fill out a bouquet.
here are some pictures I had collected on carnation bouquets:
